Customer service has deteriorated considerably over recent years. Consequently Internet alternatives have grown significantly partly due to the appalling and deteriorating service levels on the High Street. This will be a hard trend to reverse as the answers lie as much in changing a mindset as in changing customer service processes. The entrepreneur and boutique style propositions will win out while the large chains will continue to lose in the short term thereby producing even weaker returns on diminishing asset values.
When was the last time you were delighted by great customer service? I will wager you will have to delve into the dark corners of your memory to recall the moment. I will guarantee these moments are few and far between. Is it any wonder that the growth of Internet experience has been so meteoric? Once internet product providers perfected their online propositions the trajectory of growth almost became a steep upwards gradient. Consequently the great concern is that the diminishing service levels will erode returns on the value of property assets on the High Street leading this sector into a downward spiral of shop closures and the partial abandonment of inner cities and towns. This will be a tough trend to reverse. So it is not just the individual customer experience which is an issue in itself, it is leading to a far greater and more serious implication for urban economies and shopping activity.
